“If he doesn’t wake up, I want dibs on his magical energy.”

Lu shook off the haze clouding his mind and opened his eyes. His gaze fell on the speaker, with her deep voice and dark eyes—the witch goddess, Morrigan. She observed him with a lazy stare and drew a long puff of her cigarette. Her face was beautiful…ageless. It made her snow-white hair seem out of place.

Lu’s stomach turned as he realized he wasn’t at home or in his shop. He was in some sort of infirmary. The only thing that kept him from jumping up and running away was Freya’s presence. She sat next to him, staring at Morrigan with the same distrust he held.

She gave the witch goddess a fake smile. “I can take over from here.”

Morrigan twirled her cigarette between her fingers. “Hmm.”

“Where am I?” Lu shuddered.

“In our skyscraper, off of Wilshire.” Morrigan put out her cigarette.

Freya threw him a worried glance. “You nearly drained yourself, Lu. I tried to pass you some energy—”

“But the check bounced.” Morrigan chortled and flicked her cigarette toward Freya. She eyed Morrigan with a steely glint in her eyes and lowered her head to hide her reddened cheeks. “Lucky for you, I had just arrived at the club. My driver spotted Warrior Queen here stumbling out of the alley with you. You’re just…messy.” Morrigan crossed her arms.

Lu clenched his jaw. “It’s hard to be subtle when you’re fighting for your life. Now do you and the other council members believe there’s a black dagger murderer?”

Morrigan raised an eyebrow. “I’m meeting down the hall with the Council in a few minutes. Whoever’s doing this…he or she clearly poses a threat.”

Lu couldn’t help but wonder if she was referring to herself. What if she had been the attacker? But…no, she would’ve borne some type of wound or scar from last night. Freya had made contact with her sword, and he had unleashed a few harsh plagues. And though he couldn’t stand the witch and felt she was hiding something, a furtive wave of his magic, reaching out and touching her aura, told him that she was not tainted by the power of the black dagger.

“Do you feel like you’ll be ready to go home today?” Freya gave him a knowing look. He almost wanted to pull the sheets up to his chin and stay. Although he had recovered his magical strength, physically he felt as if a truck had hit him. He knew Freya wanted to know if he was still in, if he would go to Dionysus’s party tonight at Olympus. If he refused, he may very well have the black dagger murderer at his doorstep.

“Who healed me?”

Morrigan rolled her eyes. “Don’t thank me or anything. I know how you Orishas are wary of my type of witchcraft. I suppose I’ll let the Council know you’re all right. Do you need a ride home, or an escort?”

By the heavens, I wouldn’t accept either from you, Lu thought. “No, thank you.”

A knock on the door interrupted them.
